5 THINGS TO DO EVERY MORNING TO BE PRODUCTIVE THE REST OF THE DAY

How to be productive

As you know I am an industrial engineer that has a full time job from 7am-5pm. I am also a mom of 3, wife and I have this blog and a YouTube channel. My time is precious and I need to stay organized in order to feel productive and accountable at the end of the day, I have 5 things that I do every morning to stay productive, focus and motivated the rest of the day. I am here to tell you that is possible and if I can do it you can do it as well. Here are my 5 things I do every morning to be productive the rest of the day.

1. MAKE YOUR BED

As Admiral McRaven said it on his famous speech at University of Texas Austin 2014 “If you wanna change the world, start off making your bed”. He is absolutely right, making the bed first thing in the morning is the first step of being productive. Having a messy bed is like walking on trash, it will give you the sense of a messy environment and you will have difficulties to focus during the day. Therefore, create the habit of making your bed every morning and you are ahead of the game by starting your day off on the right foot.

2. TAKE A SHOWER AND DRESS UP FOR THE DAY

That’s it. If I don’t take a shower and dress up for the day I feel so unmotivated and therefore unproductive the entire day. I feel cold, just want to be in bed, everything is so slow and bothers me. Even if I take a shower and I do not put any effort on my outfit I still feel so unmotivated. Putting an effort on how I look has a direct impact on my mood and definitely will affect my productivity for the day. The fact of feeling clean fresh and pretty gives me the sense that I have that covered and consequently I feel good and ready to accomplish the tasks of the day.

3. EAT A HEALTHY BREAKFAST

This is a must, leaving the house with an empty stomach is the biggest mistake and the recipe of disaster by starting a bad day that will affect your wellness and mental health. Eat something, but something healthy, it can be as simple as granola and fruit, a coffee (or tea) with avocado toast, a fresh fruit smoothie or if you have time to cook even better cook some scramble eggs, turkey and toast (my favorite breakfast ever!). Think about your body as a machine that needs good quality fuel, you will never drive your car without oil right?, well, your stomach is the same. On top of that, breakfast will give you the energy that you need to start the day and your mind will be focus on the things you need to accomplish instead of thinking about food all morning or extra digesting the doughnut you ate as a bad decision to eat in the morning.

4. CREATE A TO-DO LIST

So you made your bed, you took a fresh shower and dressed up cute, ate a healthy breakfast, hmm, now what is next? The next thing to be productive for the day is create a To-do list with the action items you need to accomplish for the day. The key is to write them down so you can visualize all the things you need to do. If you rely on your memory 100% to remember all the things you need to do, chances are that you will fail; even if you are the smartest person on the planet. Our brains are full of distractions (specially these days) and to stay focus you need to put all those ideas and to-do actions on paper.

5. DELEGATE AS MUCH POSSIBLE

You do not have to do everything by yourself. We, as a woman tend to take action items that nobody tells us to do and make them as our own when in reality it can be an action item that any family member can execute. Instead of owning that action item, just delegate. Yes, take the leadership, a leader does not need to do everything by him/herself . Assign the task to anybody that can execute the task for you. I think the message is clear here. Delegate as much you can. For instance, if you need to drop mail at the post office and husband happens to drive by the USPS every morning on his way to work then delegate the task to him and follow up to confirm the task was done successfully.

Congratulations Teresa on your retirement, and how nice that you are dedicating time for self-care, we do need it. Meditation is a good one that I need to include and practice myself. Thank you so much for commenting, so glad to have your here. -Yocely
